Purpose of Course:
MB 680/880 is designed to focus on current topics im molecular
microbiology, as well as to establish strong fundamental skills
in organizing and presenting scientific research presentations.
The primary objectives of the course include: 1) learning the
structure and essential elements of a well-developed seminar,
2) developing skills in public speaking and oral presentations
of complex data, 3) acquiring methods to select, design and incorporate
appropriate visual media for complex data, 4) learning to evaluate
scientific seminars and data presentations, and 5) gaining new
knowledge in topical areas of Microbiology. This semester the course will rely on each student
selecting a presentation topic of interest to them. The topic
may be the same as your M.S. or Ph.D. thesis topic, and you may
use some of your own data. Remeber, this is not a lab meeting
or journal club and you need a structured presentation.
Course Profile and Grading
Policy:
Students will make presentations on topics focused on various
aspects of microbiology. Individual presentations are evaluated
by the instructor and the graduate students participating in the
course. Students are provided constructive feedback to enhance
their presentation skills. The course meets for one hour most
weeks. Grades are either S or U. You will receive an "S"
for full participation in making your own presentations and evaluating
others. If you miss more than one unexcused meeting you will
receive a "U". The course will meet for one hour
each week.
This course will cover the essential elements of structure, data
presentation and use of media, and delivery in scientific research
presentations. These essential elements will be initially discussed,
and then students will be provided the opportunity to develop
and present a seminar that incorporates these elements of effective
presentations.
Two seminars will be presented by each student.
The first seminar will be a 15 minute presentation to the course
members only. A second, 30 minute presentaton will be made
by all participants that will be open and announced to all members
of the Department of Microbiology. Students can choose to expand
on the first 15 minute presentation, or to develop a new presentation
on a different topic.
Academic Integrity:
"Cheating in any form is not acceptable.
Students are expected to abide by the North Carolina State University
Honor Code. All members of the university community (students,
faculty, and staff) share the responsibility and authority to
challenge and make known to the appropriate authority acts of
apparent academic dishonesty."
